The importance of gratitude is simply that having an abundance of it in your life will bring happiness with it.
Gratitude is something we can seldom allow ourselves to feel but it is the one simple thing that can turn a low feeling around to a good feeling.
We all have something to be thankful for.
There is a saying “I moaned because I had no shoes until I met a person who had no feet".
"Be thankful for what you have"- that is what I always heard.
At home when I was young at meal time, if you were not happy with your portion, we were told to be thankful for what you have and "moan" for more. But "moaning" for more didn't do too much for well-being.
This felt like - be grateful for your lot in life and let that be an end to it, don't look for more. These were not words of appreciation. But that is the way we were unconsciously taught to understand gratitude.
But that is not what is meant by gratitude; it is about being happy and joyful with what you have been receiving in your life so far, and where you are at in life at this moment.
Lack of appreciation for what you have will only bring on feelings of negativity but the importance of gratitude is that it really does help you avoid this negativity and it builds positivity in your life.
Right now look around you, see what you have, start looking at everything; the clothes you have, the food you have, the house you live in, the friends - the list can be endless.
Appreciate what you find, it is part of you in this world right now and enjoy it.
This does not mean you have to accept life as it is right now.
Of course go ahead and add more things you feel you need or must get done, like getting a new car, a new job or a qualification. Many do not have these things, but don’t feel guilty about this either, you having a new car or job does not mean that someone else will not get to have these too. Add what you like and enjoy it all,but also have gratitude for it in your life - gratitude and happiness go together.
But try not to get caught up in the accumulation of these things, as your primary purpose.
Have appreciation for this very moment in life because right now, in this moment, you are safe.
Even if there are unwelcome events going on in your life right this moment, everything is all right, and you can still celebrate your life with gratitude and happiness, have a positive attitude and learn how to show appreciation for what you have.
Here is a quote to explain.....................
“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier.
The way it actually works is the reverse.
You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do in order to have what you want”
Margaret Young in Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach.
What Margaret is referring to here is living you life topsy turvey style - gratitude is more than being thankful for the physical things on the outside but rather it is your feelings about who you "really are" - the inner self living in the "now".
"Sense the being that you are – not just the physical, but the sense of your own presence. That’s a great source of joy, to feel your own presence, it cannot really be defined. That’s the ultimate gratitude." Eckhart Tolle.
Looking on at your own life and cultivating self appreciation in this way can and will change your energy and your well-being and with the benefits of gratitude you will be on your way to a new life.
